Washington Freedom pulled off a nail-biting five-wicket win against LA Knight Riders in Dallas, successfully chasing down a target of 214 on the very last ball. This victory significantly boosts their chances of qualifying for the playoffs in MLC 2025.
The dramatic win was orchestrated by Glenn Phillips and Obus Pienaar, who remained calm under pressure. A dropped catch by Holder at mid-on off the final delivery proved decisive, denying the Knight Riders a hard-fought victory.
The LA Knight Riders had earlier posted a formidable total of 213/4 in their 20 overs, largely thanks to an explosive century from Andre Fletcher. Fletcher, who replaced Alex Hales in the lineup, smashed 104 runs off just 60 balls, including seven fours and six sixes.
Fletcher forged a strong opening partnership with Unmukt Chand, who contributed 41 runs off 30 balls. Together, they put on 130 runs in 74 deliveries, providing a solid foundation for their team's high score.
The Knight Riders' innings continued to gain momentum with quick contributions from Sherfane Rutherford (20 off 11), Jason Holder (11 off 6), and Andre Russell (30 not out off 13). The team managed to accumulate 59 runs in the final five overs, with Fletcher strategically retired out with two overs remaining.
Washington Freedom's chase got off to a flying start thanks to Mitchell Owen. Owen smashed 43 runs off a mere 16 balls, hitting multiple boundaries off Ali Khan and Holder, helping the team reach 73/1 during the powerplay.
During the middle overs, Glenn Maxwell (42 off 23) and Andreas Gous kept Washington Freedom ahead of the required run rate. However, the Knight Riders fought back, with Holder and Tanveer Sangha taking crucial wickets to put pressure on the batting side.
Phillips and Pienaar then joined forces, with Freedom needing 60 runs from the last six overs. The duo effectively managed the chase, taking calculated risks and maintaining the necessary scoring rate.
The match went down to the wire, with Freedom needing seven runs in the final over. Despite conceding a wide and a boundary early in the over, Russell bowled exceptionally well, bringing the game down to the very last ball.
In a dramatic turn of events, Holder dropped a catch at mid-on off the final delivery, allowing Phillips and Pienaar to scramble the winning run. The victory propelled Washington Freedom to second place in the league standings, overtaking Texas Super Kings.
