The Indian cricket team faces a crucial decision regarding Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the second Test against England, commencing on July 2nd.
Before the series, it was agreed that the premier fast bowler would only participate in three of the five Tests to manage his workload. While the specific matches were not initially disclosed by selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, Bumrah himself confirmed the three-Test plan in an interview. Head coach Gautam Gambhir echoed this sentiment in the post-match press conference in Leeds.

Following Bumrah's 44-over workload in the Headingley Test, the team management and the player himself must decide whether he will take a break. The short turnaround between the second and third Tests presents a temptation to field him at Lord's from July 10th. However, playing in Birmingham would likely rule him out of the Lord's Test due to the limited recovery time.
Gambhir emphasized that the series scoreline would not influence the decision on Bumrah's participation. Instead, the focus remains on managing his workload to ensure his availability for future matches.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, recognizing the allure of playing Bumrah in Birmingham to level the series while also keeping him fresh for Lord's.
"Bumrah said he'll play three Test matches. Now, which of the three he'll play, that's, you know, another question to be asked. I think if he takes a break, it'll be the next one, because he'll definitely want to play at Lord's, right? And there's a break, and then you go into Lord's, then there's a break, and then there's a choice between Manchester and the same. It could be 2-0 down. So that is the problem. I think he has got to play,” Shastri said on Sky Sports Cricket.
If the expected decision to rest Bumrah for Birmingham and prioritize Lord's is made, the focus will shift to finding a suitable replacement for the second Test. The Indian bowling attack lacked penetration in the first Test, even with Bumrah, making the replacement decision even more crucial.
Stuart Broad, former England pacer, suggested including Arshdeep Singh in place of Bumrah. Calls for Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion are also growing due to his potential contribution. The Indian team's direction will become clearer in the coming days, but a revamped bowling attack could be on the cards for the Birmingham Test.
