Elon Musk's xAI to Open Source Grok Chatbot, Challenging OpenAI's Closed AI Model

Elon Musk criticizes OpenAI's deviation from mission and advocates AI accessibility for all. Musk announces xAI open sourcing Grok chatbot. OpenAI CEO Altman takes a dig at Musk's chatbot. Musk, obviously didn't like the jab and replied with a long-ish message saying “GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine.”

Elon Musk, a vocal critic of OpenAI's closed approach to AI development, has announced that his AI venture, xAI, will open-source its Grok chatbot this week. This move aligns with Musk's advocacy for accessible AI for the benefit of humanity, contrasting with OpenAI's profit-driven model.

Elon Musk announces xAI will open source Grok chatbot

"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk declared on X (formerly Twitter).

Open-sourcing a chatbot like Grok means making its source code freely available and redistributable. This offers significant advantages, particularly for enterprises seeking flexible problem-solving approaches without relying solely on internal teams.

"OpenAI is a Lie"

The announcement sparked debate, with one user suggesting OpenAI should follow suit.

"OpenAI should do the same if they are 'open' that is," the user stated. Musk responded bluntly: "OpenAI is a lie."

Musk's Vision: Open-Source AI for All

Musk's commitment to open-source AI isn't new. He expressed his inclination towards this approach during a podcast with Lex Fridman in November of the previous year. "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing," he said.

This announcement followed the launch of xAI's Grok, a chatbot developed in a reported four months. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded with a sarcastic post, highlighting how GPT Builder could create a similar chatbot with a single prompt.

"GPTs can save a lot of effort:" he quipped.

Musk, not one to back down, retorted, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
