Just days after being dismissed as "crap" by Australian legend Ian Healy, West Indies seamer Shamar Joseph responded emphatically, claiming 4 wickets for 46 runs against Australia in the first innings of the first Test. This included a particularly stunning delivery to dismiss Sam Konstas.
Healy's pre-match criticism, delivered on SEN, focused on Joseph's warning to Konstas during the match, stating, "OK Shamar, well you've delivered crap all year...So he better improve, that's what I'm saying. 'He's got real trouble. 'You're not Curtly Ambrose, champ."
However, Joseph let his performance on the field do the talking. On the opening day in Bridgetown, where 14 wickets tumbled, Joseph accounted for four, including the prized scalp of Konstas.
The dismissal of Konstas was particularly noteworthy. In the fourth over, Joseph struck the Aussie opener on the back leg. The ball evaded the inside edge and struck Konstas' inner thigh, prompting a Windies review after the on-field appeal was rejected.
Video replays confirmed that the ball was destined to hit the leg stump, leading to Konstas' dismissal and giving Joseph the first breakthrough for the West Indies. Joseph's efforts contributed significantly to Australia being bowled out for a modest 180 runs. Jayden Seales also impressed, supporting Joseph's bowling attack.
Despite Joseph's heroics, the West Indies struggled to capitalize, finishing the day at 57/4. This Test series marks Australia's first tour to the West Indies since 2015, adding extra significance to the contest.
This isn't the first time Shamar Joseph has troubled the Australian batsmen. In January 2024, during only his second Test, Joseph delivered an unforgettable 10-over spell, bagging six wickets and preventing Australia from chasing down a target of 216 runs.
His final figures of 7/68 led the visitors to an 8-run victory at the Gabba, marking their first win on Australian soil in 27 years.
