Najmul Hossain, the Bangladesh Test captain, has announced his resignation from the role. This decision follows Bangladesh's recent defeat against Sri Lanka in Colombo, where they lost by an innings and 78 runs.
The announcement came during the post-match press conference. Najmul Hossain stated: "I have an announcement to make. I am stepping down from the Bangladesh Test captaincy." He emphasized that his decision was not personal but rather "entirely for the betterment of the team."
Najmul Hossain explained his belief that Bangladesh doesn't need separate captains for all three formats of the game. He highlighted that the ODI captaincy was recently assigned to Mehidy Hasan, and he himself had previously stepped down as T20I captain.
"Over the last few years, I have had the opportunity to be in this dressing room, and I don't feel it is logical to have three captains for three formats...In my view, having three captains will be difficult for the team. So, for the betterment of the team, I am stepping down," he elaborated.
He further clarified that the decision was communicated to the cricket operations department a few days prior to the public announcement.
Najmul Hossain also addressed concerns that his decision might be related to being overlooked for the ODI captaincy. "I just hope people don't see this as a personal issue or think I did this because I felt bad about the ODI captaincy snub. I want to make it clear again: this is for the betterment of the team. There is nothing personal here," he asserted.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board is yet to comment on the situation and announce a replacement for the Test captaincy.
