The Indian cricket team has commenced its preparations for the crucial second Test against England, holding their first net session at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday. This practice marked their return to the field following a disappointing five-wicket defeat in the series opener at Headingley, which handed England a 1-0 lead in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

While the entire squad was present, including pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, he notably sat out the net session. Prasidh Krishna was also absent from bowling and other drills. The remaining players, however, engaged in a full training session. Mohammed Siraj dedicated a significant amount of time to honing his batting skills. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was observed in deep conversation with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep, likely strategizing for the upcoming match.
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were among those who batted in the nets, and the bowlers, excluding Bumrah and Prasidh, went through their bowling routines. Despite the pressure mounting after the loss in Leeds, the atmosphere within the camp appeared relaxed. The team, currently undergoing a transition phase, continues to receive unwavering support from the leadership, with senior players actively mentoring the younger members.
On Thursday, the team engaged in a bonding activity at an adventure park in Birmingham, providing a welcome respite before the intensity of the Test series resumed.
The primary focus remains on the availability of Bumrah. Having bowled extensively in the first Test (44 overs), it is anticipated that he will participate in only three matches throughout the series to effectively manage his workload. This approach was reaffirmed by Head Coach Gambhir during the post-match press conference, emphasizing that Bumrah's appearances would not be dictated by the series scoreline but rather assessed on a game-by-game basis.
Given the short turnaround between the second Test at Edgbaston (July 2–6) and the third at Lord’s (July 10–14), speculation suggests that Birmingham could be the designated match for Bumrah's rest. Both Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar have consistently stressed the importance of workload management, indicating that Bumrah’s participation will be determined with a long-term perspective, irrespective of the series' current standing.
